INSIGHT 4 | RESEARCH MATTERS

Ever thought about trying a fresh approach?

Want to unlock insights you can actually apply?

The problem is rarely lack of information.

It’s the way you go about looking.

in⁴ | Research Matters

Act on instinct... Informed by insight

Research is the oxygen of innovation. It gives ideas context, shape and trajectory. Yet in an age of digital acceleration, research has shifted from slow accumulation to rapid crystallisation, AI has changed the game.

Most innovators will research in the early phases to test their thinking, seeking clarity that a genuine opportunity has been unlocked. But research is often undervalued as a tool, one that I firmly believe should be applied continuously, infinitely. Not to stifle creativity, but to sharpen it. With knowledge comes insight, and with insight comes the clarity to make micro-pivots, that ultimately set you apart from the crowd.

Avoiding the Avalanche

Once you’re on the innovation black run, it’s a treacherous landscape to navigate and jeopardy abounds. The challenge isn’t a lack of data, there’s more than you could ever need, it’s knowing how to unearth what matters, what will inform the direction of travel.

What’s required are clearer questions focused on what’s relevant to your unique journey. Poorly directed research can paralyse, but that’s a pitfall entirely within your control; a gate you can clip without changing course or losing pace.

The trick is to move away from research on demand, that infrequent, reactive pattern that only kicks in when you stall, and build instead a rhythm of daily curiosity. That conscious decision to change behaviour, once instilled often proves invaluable, a gamechanger in its own right.

And yes, I can hear the instinctive response: “I’ve got no time.” You’re right, but that notion only holds true if you use conventional means. Gone are the days you visited the library and trawled through microfilm, even searching and interrogating particular websites is no longer required, thankfully technology has moved on at pace. Today you have a co-pilot you can dedicate to the task, your eyes and ears across that library of life we call the internet. Information literally at your fingertips.

AI is effectively a research multiplier, the best-read source you could wish for, with an unrivalled capacity and thirst for knowledge. Coupled with the ability to summarise complex information, making it digestible and more importantly actionable, you have a seriously talented assistant, albeit often fallible and infuriatingly flawed, but then that is why you are posing the questions and deciding outcomes.

Set a schedule. Craft prompts that align with your path. Let AI do the heavy lifting while you chart the course. Don’t forget you’re the driver. So go ahead drive, don’t let yourself be driven.

The key is to keep it fresh, adapt the questions as you traverse. Each new prompt compounds clarity and your instincts sharpen. Innovation fuelled by research accelerates under its own momentum. Spread your net wide and who knows you might catch a sailfish, the fastest marine predator on the planet. (Random I know but I’m looking ahead and teeing up in²⁴, all will become clear, trust me).

The core principle of my prelude Read it. Act on It. Win with it comes into its own. This book is effectively part of your research and introducing even a 5-minute daily ritual could prove decisive.

Put simply, there are three foundations to any good innovation…

Research: Insights that reveal what already exists.

Research: Insights that uncover exploitable gaps.

Research: Insights that inform the journey ahead.

Insight is not impact, that only comes when you interpret and act on what you’ve learnt. That judgement is yours; instinct is irrepressibly and uncompromisingly human.
